Making a choose your own adventure game using google docs-

For our first assignment in Game Project 1, we are tasked to create a narrative game. One important rule I recalled from the very first class was that we can use any method to create the game, whether we make it in Godot or Unreal, or even make physical games as specified by the professor, anything can be used since we only have a few weeks to create each game in this class, the games need to be short and small, “microscopic” even.

After being shown some examples of narrative games from itch.io, I learned that a visual novel is an example of a narrative game.

My first thought was to create a narrative game with google docs since it is very easy to use and I do not have to learn how to code a narrative game through Godot, or learn an entirely new program such as Twine.

September 11, 2024, marks the 2nd week of school and the day I start creating a narrative game.

My three inspirations for making my narrative game are:

  • Game developer Emily Pitcher (@SonderingEmily on instagram and youtube) for her resourcefulness and creating games in google apps such as google slides and google sheets
  • “Kolb and the Dragon”, a choose your own adventure book found in Skyrim
  • “The Hot Date, A Chew Your Own Adventure” narrative game found in the book Cyanide and Happiness Punching Zoo, by Kris Wilson, Rob Denbleyker, Matt Melvin, and Dave McElfatrick

I chose a classic setting; medieval high fantasy. An adventurer seeking to slay a dragon. I am not too clever with making up names so I just looked up medieval sounding names or looked up names of planets and their moons. I then eventually settled with Arthur Alexander Arcturus, the protagonist of the narrative game whose fate is up to the player’s decisions.

As I type the story, I give the player 2 choices, using linked text to click to a specific bookmarked page

If a player chooses a bookmark that links to a game that says THE END, this means the player got one of the bad endings and must restart the adventure

September 15, 2024:

Most of the pages I need done during class, today I will be finishing the narrative game with one good ending where the player will not need to click on a THE END linking back to the first page.

I look forward to see people’s reactions and thoughts when playing my narrative game since I don’t think many people in the program are familiar with a text based choose your own adventure.
